Step 5

Identify your action

This step will help you find inspiration and decide what you can do concretely to reach your goal.

Have you ever heard of Greta Thunberg? Of course, you have. What you might not know is that her popular activism started at her home, when she challenged her parents to lower the family’s impact on the environment by becoming vegan and giving up flying. Greta is just one of the numerous changemakers who have been the engine to change. Finding out more about them and their actions will be an excellent inspiration for your group and the activity you are going to plan.
However, before getting started with a necessary brainstorming activity, it would be useful to take some time to relax together. Spend 5 minutes playing some dynamic and lively game and you’ll see this lets you clear your minds and feel loaded with energy.

Now, you are ready to start talking about the planning of one or more concrete activities. During this step, it is essential that all the voices are heard and that every group member has a say. Remember to be properly equipped, so analyze the nature of the activity you wish to organize and make sure your means are adequate. Discuss who could be in charge of what by respecting your personal skills and individual inclinations. And, above all, take advantage of the time you spend together, as this might be most cheerful of all steps.

  • Where can you find inspiration for possible activities to undertake?
  • What kind of personal contribution can each member of your group give?
  • Will your activity imply a change in our own behavior?
  • Are you planning to invite local politicians to your activity?
  • Will your activity imply a transfer of knowledge?
  • Are you going to create an account of your group on social networks?

1

Let every kind of source inspire you, but always question what you read, see or listen to.

2

Don’t forget that your activity will take place in a given geographical, social, and political context. Get all the necessary information about it.

3

Now that you are confident with the SMART requirements, apply them also to your single activities (festivals, clothes swapping parties, fundraisers, or whatever you like most).

Change creates change. A group of changemakers had consulted the municipality while planning their action of planting 30 trees within 3 months. Local politicians were then invited to join the event of planting the trees and this activity paved the way for the municipality co-financing projects in the field of global education.

What do you need to move on?

To consider this step completed, make sure that everyone has a clear idea of the agreed action and feels energized about what’s next.

Take a deep breath and go to step 6. You’ll finally have the chance to get concrete!
